YET ANOTHER FANTASTIC REVIEW
A multi-cultural, genre-hopping experience - untouched by the bleached uniformity of corporate muzak - Batty Wing Wing show the depth that can be wrung from just electric guitar and drums. This emerging band offer a welcome change to the spokes-people unit-movers filed under alternative in your local cd barn.
A three-piece – two guitars and drums- they have a stripped, pared down sound, fleshed out with samples and distortion. Moody and evocative, they build tension in their songs before releasing it in an explosion of catharsis.
Some of the influences that emerge from the Wing Wing soup are acts like Joy Division, Velvet Underground, early Sonic Youth and a Dean Martin-style lounge act. They tackle universal themes– love, chicks, the drear of the 9to5 workaday – but refracted through their own dark prism of perception.
One thing that marks out the Wing is that they don’t paint only in a palette of black. Amidst all the darkness, they‘re not afraid to lighten the mood with a splash of humour and self-mockery. Cheeky imps in the sometimes po-faced goth-new romantic scene from which they sprung.
A new dawn of the dark is creeping across the Sydney-scape. Like a psychiatrist’s black-inkspot on the bland whitewash of contemporary pop, Batty Wing Wing invite u to interpret them as u will.
